A great solution to missing teeth, dental implants are an effective way to fill the gaps in your gums! Unlike dentures, dental implants won’t come loose and they look and feel like your natural teeth. With implants, you can resume your regular dental hygiene routine and use your new tooth as you would any other. Because implants don’t need to be anchored to neighboring teeth, you can maintain your oral health with ease.
At Quality Dental Care in Omaha, Dr. Erich Trumm specializes in dental implants, providing patients with a permanent solution to missing teeth. Do what’s best for the health of your teeth and consider receiving implants from Dr. Trumm. If you’re unfamiliar with dental implants and the process, let Quality Dental Care fill you in!
Dental Implants Explained
A dental implant consists of a titanium post that is placed in your jaw, serving as the root for your new tooth to be placed. The post is attached to your jawbone below the gumline where it must fuse with the bone to provide a sturdy root.
Patients who are interested in dental implants must have sufficient bone strength and healthy gums to receive them. If necessary, a bone graft will need to be performed prior to receiving the implant. Consult with Dr. Trumm to find out what is right for you.
The Process
Typically, the implant process is done over the course of a few months, with multiple visits to the dentist throughout. Most implant procedures require about five months to complete. Take a look at each step of the implant process below:
- Placing the Implant: The first step is surgically placing the implant into your jawbone. Once it’s placed, a few months must pass to allow the implant to fuse to your bone.
- Attaching the Abutment: Once the healing process ends, an incision is made to expose the implant, where the abutment will be attached with a screw. The abutment is used to attach the crown, your new tooth, to the implant. Again, some time is required for your new tooth to be created.
- Applying the Crown: When your tooth is finished, it’s time to come back and receive your permanent crown. The crown is most often made of porcelain.
Implant Maintenance
Maintaining your implant is quite simple. Just like your natural teeth, it’s important to brush and floss regularly to protect your new implant. With proper care, implants can last many years and only the crown may need to be replaced thereafter.
